Subject: INSPIRILI Student Award “We Help Beirut" Beirut Port Competition

The Port of Beirut is the main port in Lebanon on the eastern part of the Saint George Bay on Beirut's northern Mediterranean coast, west of the Beirut River. It is one of the largest and busiest ports on the Eastern Mediterranean. On 4 August 2020, a large explosion, caused by improperly stored ammonium nitrate, occurred at the port, killing at least 204 people, injuring more than 6,500 and rendering 300,000 others homeless. Large sections of the port and its infrastructure were destroyed, including most of Beirut's grain reserves. The Port of Beirut was forced to close, due to the large-scale damage caused by the explosions, with cargo being redirected to smaller ports, such as Tripoli and Tyre. Prior to the disaster, about 60 percent of Lebanon's imports came through the port, according to an S&P Global estimate. Above all, Beirut-the capital that was spawned by its harbor as the focal Middle Eastern node point that connected many continents has been left with a dead Port.
In this competition, students from all over the world are invited to rethink the future port of Beirut. Participants are challenged to not only think of the new port as a piece of architecture or an urban master plan but raising the question of how to exploit the very expensive lands for the benefit of fostering the economy and commerce as well as restoring the indispensable storage area and the essential port-functions: the mission is to bring back the port's competitive aptness in its context in order to further engage in the world trading markets.

Redesigning the camping area in Yeniboğaziçi

This semester, in M-arch 591/592 design studio, we aimed to develop a new approach by reorganising and redesigning the camping area which is belongs to Yeniboğaziçi Municipality. Since the camping site is acting as a gated area and belongs to the individuals, our main ideal approach is to remind that, camping area is a public open space within a very nice natural environment where must be opened to the public with a variety of uses. So we expected from the students to design a masterplan of the site and created their architectural scenario in order to raise the attractions of the people to the area. Anybody, who wants to come with her/his tent or with their caravans or want to stay in a moduler camping units, can have a chance to access easily to the area. In addition, it was expected from them to design one social center which is going to serve to the camping area and another one sea club center which was planned to locate to the east side of camping site very close to the beach and the sea where hosting water sport activity. So we were aiming to create an architectural scenario that all these spaces need to be considered in a holistic approach where can be acted as an whole public recreational/social spaces together with the sea front.

Community Centre for the slow town Yeni Boğaziçi

Yeni Boğaziçi is member of Cittaslow, which is an international network founded 1999 in Italy. Cittaslow is part of a cultural trend known as the slow movement and inspired by the slow food movement. Cittaslow's goals include improving the quality of life in towns with a population under 50,000 by slowing down its overall pace, especially in a town's use of spaces and the flow of life and traffic through them. The main aims of the movement are making life better for everyone living in an urban environment, improving the quality of life in the cities, resisting the homogenization and globalization of towns around the globe, protecting the environment, promoting cultural diversity and uniqueness of individual cities and providing inspiration for a healthier lifestyle.

Based on the aims of the Cittaslow movement, the Yeni Boğaziçi Municipality is aiming to offer a Community Centre for its citizens.A community centre, which is already lacking in the city and at the same time a necessity to today's everyday needs will be developed in the town centre. It can contribute to the various demands of the different ages and interests, especially for the youth and senior citizens. With such purpose, it offers a main attraction of the town, with potential activities that would ultimately improve the public life.

By considering the existing regulations, the resulting community centre project with maximum two floors and maximum 1300 square metres used area should blend recreational, educational and administrative uses, where those functions are physically and functionally integrated, and provide pedestrian and cycling connections together with vehicular solutions. Therefore, clubs, academic studios, arts and crafts ateliers, and communal gathering spaces like multipurpose hall and exhibition areas are expected to be fulfilled within the program of the centre.

Additionally, a culinary art school and a meditation centre is alternatively designed especially in the town centre for the cultural life of the citizens.The Community Centre is to be organized in the design with the given site by Yeni Boğaziçi Municipality with the aim of improving the quality of life with the inspiration for a healthier lifesyle in an urban environment. Care is to be taken on sustainable urban issues like protecting biological diversity and ecology, avoiding heat island effect, reduced paving and establishing green areas and general integration with the town centre while considering a contemporary approach. Energy efficiency issues are also to be addressed and, in this regard, considered within the design proposal.

Rehabilitation Centre for the specific user group, CMC Golf Club, Lefke

The studio has given a challenging task to students not only architecturally but socially by selecting a socially sensible subject of designing a rehabilitation center. The brief of the project and the user group definition intentionally left flexible to let students research and understand the lack of facilities and demand of the community on the island. This methodology created very interesting projects and responses to the communal problem. The studio aims to showcase its findings.

While presenting different solutions to social problems. Students will also exhibit their architectural approaches. How architecture can be used as a tool to heal the community and also become a rehabilitation starter for a town.
